Reading- We have began reading a new novel: “Number the Stars”. Our standards for these three weeks involve: figurative language, characterization, types of literary genres, flashback and foreshadowing, identifying characters as static or dynamic, flat or round. We have a couple of in-class projects during this unit: Puzzling portraits (similes and metaphors), chalk outline character sketches, and Star of David plot organizers.

Math and Pre-Algebra- All math classes are studying standards from our graphing unit. All students and teachers in Building 8 took a survey of their “Favorites” and we are using these results to construct and analyze different graphs like histograms, box-and-whisker plots, line graphs, circle graphs, stem-and-leaf plots, scatterplots, and a few more.

Math: This week we will continue our investigation of integers (positive and negative numbers). Specificly we will review comparing and ordering integers, as well as adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing integers. These concepts can be found in unit 3 of the textbook.

http://themathgames.com/our-games/arithmetic-games/order-positive-negative-integers/

Pre Algebra: We are still working on fraction operations this week. Next, week we will begin to incoporate integers with fractions. Therefore mastery of fraction operations is esstiontual before moving on.

READING: This week the first reading groups will finish up reading The Cay and complete their project. Reading groups switch on Wednesday and those students new to my reading class will begin reading The Cay novel.

MATH: We’ll start our fractions unit this week and take a quiz over the skills we’ve learned so far this year. Students will be able to check out their notebooks to take home and study but these must be returned ASAP for use in class.

Reminder—if you haven’t already done so, please purchase a TI30XA calculator-they are around $10 at local stores. Please feel free to send an email or give me a call at school if you need to contact me for any reason. We are off to a GREAT start for this school year and I’m really looking forward to getting to know all the students better!

Reminder–Keep an eye out for progress reports to go home on Wednesday!
